⚠️ 2026 update on CGRP medications for migraine
This media segment is from 2021, when Emgality had just become PBS-listed and the other CGRP options were still on a private prescription. The landscape has changed significantly. In 2026:
- 3 CGRP medications are PBS-listed in Australia: Emgality (galcanezumab), Ajovy (fremanezumab) and Vyepti (eptinezumab — IV).
- Aimovig (erenumab) is registered in Australia but is not PBS-subsidised; full private cost applies.
- PBS criteria require chronic migraine with ≥8 headache days per month, failed ≥3 oral preventatives, neurologist prescription, and not concurrently on PBS Botox.

With Emgality being listed from today on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, Dr Granot was interviewed about chronic migraine and this medication.

This means that it will now cost around $40 per month per script, rather than the current $263.
This is great news for patients with chronic migraine, as it gives us more options to use as a preventative. It joins Botox as a well tolerated, easy to use intermittent treatment for chronic migraine.
How well does Emgality work?
The medication is potent at reducing migraine frequency and intensity, with benefit accumulating over months.
This shows the reduction in headache days after months of treatment with the medication.
Side effects of this medication are mild, usually injection site reactions and constipation (others are rare).
How Does Emgality Work?
The medication works by blocking the last chemical released into the surface of the brain, CGRP, before the pain of the migraine begins.
