Dr Tal Koren — Consultant Neurologist (Neuroimmunology)

Dr Tal Koren, consultant neurologist (neuroimmunology), East Neurology Sydney

Dr Tal Koren — Consultant Neurologist (Neuroimmunology), East Neurology

Dr Tal Koren is a consultant neurologist with subspecialty expertise in neuroimmunology — the diagnosis and modern treatment of autoimmune diseases of the nervous system — including multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), MOG antibody-associated disease (MOG-AD), autoimmune encephalitis, myasthenia gravis (MG) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). He also consults in general neurology.

He joins East Neurology in Bondi Junction in July 2026, bringing dedicated neuroimmunology care to the eastern suburbs. For patients, that means seeing a neurologist who works at the leading edge of a fast-moving field — where the right diagnosis and an early, modern treatment plan can change the entire course of an autoimmune neurological condition.

What Dr Koren treats

🧠 Multiple sclerosis (MS)

The most common autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Modern high-efficacy disease-modifying therapy (DMT), expert MRI monitoring and relapse care.

👁️ NMOSD & MOG-AD

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and MOG antibody-associated disease (MOG-AD) — conditions that mimic MS but need different, targeted treatment.

NMOSD →   MOG-AD →

⚡ Autoimmune encephalitis

Brain inflammation causing memory, seizure or psychiatric change — where starting treatment early makes the biggest difference to recovery.

💪 Myasthenia gravis, CIDP & GBS

Neuromuscular and immune nerve conditions — including the latest FcRn (neonatal Fc receptor) and complement therapies for myasthenia gravis (MG), and IVIG for CIDP and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).

MG →   GBS & CIDP →

🔍 Neurosarcoidosis

An under-diagnosed inflammatory condition that can mimic almost any neurological problem — diagnosed with careful, combined workup.

🩺 General neurology

Dr Koren also consults in general neurology — chronic migraine and headache (including Botox), epilepsy and seizures, stroke and TIA (transient ischaemic attack), dizziness and vertigo, tremor, peripheral neuropathy, facial pain, and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating, treated with Botox).

Is Dr Koren right for you?

Neuroimmunology has changed faster than almost any other area of neurology, and choosing a neurologist who focuses on it — and keeps pace with it — directly affects your diagnosis, your treatment options and your long-term outcome. With Dr Koren you can expect:

  • The right diagnosis. MS, NMOSD and MOG-AD can look almost identical yet need completely different treatments — and the wrong drug can make some of them worse. Subspecialty expertise and careful antibody interpretation get this right.
  • Access to the newest treatments — early. From high-efficacy MS therapies started at diagnosis to targeted biologics for NMOSD and myasthenia gravis, Dr Koren practises at the current frontier rather than yesterday’s standard of care.
  • MRI read with research-level insight. Dr Koren’s research is on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers that reveal whether MS is progressing — so your scans are interpreted by someone who studies exactly that, and knows when to act.
  • A clear plan and a real partnership. Plain-English explanations and shared decisions about treatment — backed by long-term follow-up, not one-off advice.
  • Time to talk — never rushed. New-patient appointments run a full 60 minutes and follow-ups 30 minutes, so there is real time to ask questions, weigh up your options and make decisions together.
  • A genuine second opinion. If you are already under another neurologist — or were diagnosed years ago — Dr Koren can review whether a modern, higher-efficacy approach would serve you better.

Approach to care

Dr Koren works alongside Dr Ron Granot and the East Neurology team to deliver:

  • Detailed initial consultation — comprehensive history, examination, and a clear diagnostic plan
  • Modern evidence-based treatment — disease-modifying therapy (DMT) choices informed by current Australian guidelines, the latest evidence, and your lifestyle, comorbidities and preferences
  • Technology-enabled practice — contemporary clinical workflows, including AI-assisted clinical documentation, freeing up consultation time for the conversation rather than the keyboard
  • Coordinated multidisciplinary care — links with MS nurses, neurophysiotherapy, infusion services, neuropsychology and urodynamics where relevant
  • Long-term relationship — neuroimmunology is rarely a one-visit condition; care is built around continuity, with ready access to subspecialty review and step-up therapy decisions

The goal is simple: an accurate diagnosis, the most effective modern treatment for your condition, and a neurologist who stays with you for the long term.

Training pipeline

Years Role Hospital
2018–2023 Resident Medical Officer Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney
2023–2024 Neurology Advanced Trainee Institute of Clinical Neuroscience, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
2024–2025 Neurology Advanced Trainee Royal North Shore Hospital

2026– Consultant Neurologist East Neurology, Bondi Junction

Dr Koren completed his dedicated Neuroimmunology Fellowship at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, working with the broader Royal Prince Alfred / Brain and Mind Centre, University of Sydney MS Research Group — one of Australia’s leading centres for multiple sclerosis and central nervous system autoimmune disease research. He continues academic involvement with this research group through his MPhil. His clinical neurophysiology expertise — nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) — further complements his autoimmune neurology practice.

Research

Alongside clinical practice, Dr Koren is undertaking a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) at the University of Sydney studying radiological biomarkers of multiple sclerosis disease progression — work that informs how neurologists interpret MRI changes and decide when to escalate therapy.
